Cambodian Fencing Team Returns from 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany
Phnom Penh, 28 July 2025
The Cambodian Fencing delegation safely returned to Phnom Penh International Airport on July 25, 2025, following their participation in the 2025 FISU World University Games, held from July 16 to 27 in Rhin Ruhr, Germany.
The Kingdom of Cambodia was represented in six sporting disciplines at the international event, including Fencing—an art of sword fighting— by one coach and four female athletes. Despite their dedication and effort, the Cambodian Fencing team did not progress to the Direct Elimination stage due to several challenges encountered during the competition.
According to the coaching staff, the team faced difficulties both in terms of technical equipment and reception by the host organizers. Equipment inspections revealed that some items, including swords and metallic scoring vests (lames), did not meet international standards, resulting in penalties and the urgent need to replace gear. Unfortunately, these unforeseen obstacles affected the athletes’ performance and overall outcomes.
With a strong vision for the Cambodia Fencing team, the head coach said, “We entered this competition with the goal of gaining valuable international experience and benchmarking our athletes’ abilities in preparation for the upcoming 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. Despite facing experienced world medalists, we believed our athletes were capable of competing at a high level.”
Along with that athlete Ms. Phat Lika reflected on the experience, stating, “From what I saw, the international competitors were not significantly better than us. I truly wonder why we couldn’t perform at their level.”
Fellow athlete Ms. Hay Sreysros added, “Although this was a global-level tournament, I did not feel intimidated. However, I am still searching for answers as to why I couldn’t execute the right strategies or deliver my best performance.”
Historically, the Fencing Federation of Cambodian has faced financial limitations in sending athletes to international competitions. Most participants have had to rely on personal funds, except in events officially supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.
In 2025, the Cambodian Fencing team participated in two major international events: the recently concluded 2025 FISU World University Games and the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, scheduled to take place in December in Thailand.
