Heartbreak in Hong Kong: Cambodia’s Olga Left Unsatisfied Despite Historic World Fencing Championship Run

Cambodian-Italian fencing star Olga has expressed deep dissatisfaction with her performance after a dramatic, literal last-second elimination in the Round of 64 at the World Fencing Championships.

Competing in the Women’s Individual Foil event against a massive field of 132 elite fencers, Olga represented Cambodia in the two-day tournament held from July 24 to July 27, 2026, in Hong Kong.

Olga opened the tournament on fire during the pool stages on July 24, securing a strong 33th-place seed and cruising through the Round of 128. She then dominant-fenced her way past Argentina with a crushing 15-3 victory to advance to the next elimination rounds.

However, July 27 brought a grueling clash against a top-tier South Korean opponent. In a thrilling, point-for-point battle, Olga fought tooth and nail to push the match into a tie as the regulation clock expired. Under tournament rules, the bout went into a high-stakes, 1-minute sudden-death overtime. In a heartbreaking turn of luck, Olga narrowly conceded the final point, falling 12-13.

While fans and coaches praised her grit, the Cambodian fencer was fiercely critical of her own performance.

"I feel sad about today's result," Olga said post-match. "I know I fenced well, but I also made too many mistakes during the bout."

Olga ultimately finished 51st overall. While this falls short of her stellar 27th-place finish at the 2025 Championships, she remains the highest-ranked fencer from Southeast Asia, mirroring her dominant regional display at the Asian Fencing Championships just this past June.

The Fencing Federation of Cambodian remains overwhelmingly proud of her trajectory.

"Even though we didn't capture a medal, this performance firmly puts Cambodia on the international fencing map," said Sok Ang, a senior official at the federation.

Ang also revealed that this tournament marks the end of Olga's season—a season where she successfully balanced elite fencers with her professional career, having recently spent eight grueling months studying to pass her bar exam to become a licensed attorney.

Looking forward, Cambodia has its eyes set on the biggest stage in sports.

"Olga and I have already sat down and mapped out a clear target: the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games," Ang added. "We have selected our strategy and tournaments for the upcoming season, which will be crucial for collecting the qualification points needed to secure her ticket to the Olympics."
