Youth Fencing Gains Momentum with Doubling Participation in 2025 National Primary School Games

MAY 4th, 2025

The 2025 National Primary School Sports Competition officially kicked off on the morning of May 3rd, bringing with it the second-ever appearance of fencing at the national level for primary school students. This year’s event marks a significant milestone for the sport, with participation levels more than doubling compared to the previous year.

Held at the Western International School – Stadium Branch – from May 2nd to 5th, fencing was again included as an official sport under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport’s 2025 initiative. This decision has opened doors for young fencers across the country, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

In 2025, a total of 66 participants – 40 boys and 26 girls under the age of 13 – competed in four individual events. These young athletes came from 12 different provinces and cities, representing a dramatic increase from last year’s debut, which saw only 39 participants from 6 locations. This growth not only demonstrates a rising interest in fencing but also reflects the successful outreach and development efforts of the national sports programs.

Notably, compared to the 4th Western Cup Fencing Championship held earlier, this national-level competition saw a 15% increase in participation, indicating a steady upward trend in engagement with the sport.

As fencing continues to gain recognition and popularity among Cambodia’s youth, the 2025 competition stands as a testament to the sport’s expanding future in the country. With growing support and opportunities, the path forward for young Cambodian fencers looks bright.
