Cambodia’s 2025 National Fencing Championship to Launch Under a New and Inclusive Format
21 July 2025
The Cambodian Fencing Federation has officially announced the organization of the 2025 National Fencing Championship, scheduled to take place from August 22 to 24, 2025. This prestigious event, now entering its 11th consecutive year, will be held with support from the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports.
In a significant development aimed at increasing participation and broadening public interest, the Federation has decided to host the National Championship in conjunction with the inaugural CAM Fencing Open. This new open-format competition will, for the first time, welcome international residents living in Cambodia who actively train in fencing, offering them a unique opportunity to compete alongside local athletes.
The combined event will span three days, featuring a total of six individual events and two team events. While this does not yet encompass the full 12 official fencing disciplines, the Federation cited time limitations, athlete availability, and budget constraints as factors influencing this year’s format.
Looking at recent trends, fencing in Cambodia has seen encouraging growth. During the 2023 Western Fencing Cup, held in March of that year, 159 athletes registered—surpassing participation numbers from the 2024 National Championship. Based on this upward trajectory, the Federation anticipates a 20% increase in participants for 2025, potentially reaching around 180 athletes.
As for the competition venue, a final decision has not yet been made. The Federation is currently exploring strategic locations that are not only logistically suitable but also capable of attracting greater public attention. Among the options being considered are major shopping malls and high-footfall urban centers, with the goal of introducing fencing to a broader audience and increasing engagement with the sport.
The upcoming championship and CAM Fencing Open are shaping up to be a milestone in Cambodia’s fencing journey—promoting inclusion, international collaboration, and increased visibility for one of the world’s most elegant and disciplined martial arts.
